History
The Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway has a rich and complex history. Originally conceived as the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the project aimed to connect the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, providing a safer shipping route through the state. Driven by business owners and traders seeking to facilitate the movement of goods like timber and cotton, the canal project gained momentum in the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, studies deemed the canal too expensive and difficult to build, leading to the project's suspension. During World War II, the canal was revived as a security measure, but a surge of environmental awareness in the 1960s sparked fierce opposition, led by activist Marjorie Harris Carr. Ultimately, the project was deauthorized in 1990, and the partially completed land was transformed into the expansive Cross Florida Greenway we know today.
