Camping, forest hiking trails and nature come together in Marion County, Florida, like nowhere else. Marion County has some of the state’s finest trails, ready and waiting for a variety of uses. Among the best is Cross Florida Greenway, 32 miles of the statewide Florida Trail, with access at 49th Ave., Marshall Swamp, and Baseline. The area is home to a wide array of wildlife and plants including the long spurred mint, a unique plant found nowhere else.
The Ocala National Forest offers another 70 miles of trails within the county, extending from Marshall Swamp to Lake Kerr and from Putnam County border south to the Lake County border on the east side of the forest. Descriptive visitor information, well marked trails and some of the most pleasant hiking opportunities in Florida are available in the national forest. Your outing will take you past clear lakes, impressive rivers and small streams for picture perfect hiking and camping. Forest trails offer sightings of deer and other wild creatures. Trails start at Bear Swamp, Salt Springs, Silver Glen Springs, Lake Eaton, Lake Eaton Sinkhole, Juniper Springs, and Pat’s Island.
